Buff Headwear

It took my 7-year-old son to spot the potential of Buff headwear (as worn in my photo). Picking one up in a kit shop and with one eye on the promotional video playing at the display he threw it to me and said, “Daddy, that’s for running in!” I did just that (having paid, I should add) and now I’m a fully fledged convert.

I’ve always favoured fairly stripped down running but since stepping up to ultra distances there’s certainly plenty of potential – not to mention good reason – to “kit up” at least a little and the first Buff I picked up proved the perfect addition to my running gear. They can be worn in seemingly inexhaustible configurations from headband to beanie, each providing excellent wicking and/or sun protection or, in bad weather, additional warmth.

My original Buff kept the torrential rain out of my eyes at this year’s Dartmoor Ultra Marathon and has since kept sweat out at both the Wycombe Half and New Forest 10 where a quick drenching at a water station also helped temperature regulation.

My collection has now grown to include the excellent High UV Protection Buff and a Visor Buff which combines the original microfiber Buff with a neoprene peak – both of which will, no doubt, prove invaluable when I run the Namibia 24-hour Ultra Marathon.

After a couple of runs in my new DS Asics lightweight trainers, it quickly became apparent that although the new ‘09 DS model fitted better than my old DS Asics, they were not going to meet my needs as a forefoot runner. They do not have the same flexibility as my previous DS shoes and [...]

I currently rotate 2 pairs of running trainers, my Newton’s and a pair of Asics Gel DS trainers, which I’ve owned for the last 3 years and love. But, after hundreds of running miles it’s finally time to replace my DS trainers. I’ve worn down areas of the sole, especially around the forefoot area, to [...]

As soon as I decided to take my running training and competition more seriously, I decided it was time to buy a performance watch. After reading every review going and speaking to my running and triathlete friends, I finally bought the Garmin Forerunner 305 last May. It was loaded with all the features I [...]

Camelbak Flashflo Hydration System Review

Every runner, every athlete knows the importance of hydration. Without good hydration the race can be lost well before its truly underway. But I had always hated – hated with an irrational burning passion – carrying water bottles with me. Part of the reason was that terrible, low level, sloshing sound that seems to magnify [...]

New Balance 835 Trainers Review

I have had many people look at my feet while I am running and remark that my trainers are ‘old,’ ‘worn out’ or perhaps ‘well used.’ My favourite comment, however, is ‘well experienced looking trainers.’ And there is a reason for why I have these comments. Today seems to me to be the perfect opportunity [...]

From heel striker to forefoot runner – why I love my Newtons

At the beginning of my winter training this year, I started training with a new Triathlon Coach who wanted me to change my running style from heel striker to forefoot running. He said it would increase my speed and running efficency, and reduce my risk of injury. I was apprehensive at first and questioned his [...]
