Yes, there’s the cliché about books and covers of course but there is a real disconnect here between the history of Honey Stinger – with its origins stretching back six decades – and the rather garish packaging complete with angry super-muscled bee (wasp?) And that’s a shame because the products we have on sample –Honey Stinger Waffles and the Energy Bars – are really very good indeed.
Taking each in turn. The Honey Stinger Energy Bars are available in Peanut Butter and Rocket Chocolate flavours which both have a good homemade taste and texture. The Peanut Butter flavour quenched our frequent craving for nuttiness whilst training and the Rocket Chocolate could genuinely be mistaken for some ludicrously expensive chocolate confection from an unpronounceable patisserie. Both contain honey of course (25 and 30% respectively) but deliver differing amounts of carbs, protein, etc. due to the otherwise differing ingredients. But taking the Rocket Chocolate as an example you can expect, per 100g, 364kcal, 10g fat (4g saturates), 52g carbs (36g of which is sugars), 10g protein, 4g fibre and 0.85g of salt. The bars are 45g so either do the maths or roughly half those values.
The Energy Bars also contain a large range of vitamins and minerals including A, D, E, C, B6, B12 and calcium.
The Honey Stinger Waffles come in at 30g with not dissimilar nutritional values (details here) and in three flavours: Strawberry – a little sweet to our taste, Honey – excellent and oddly not too sweet, and Lemon, which, regrettably, we didn’t have on test. Again there’s something of the homespun quality to the waffles with an authentic texture and largely organic credentials. The only downside to the Honey Stinger Waffles is the size, 30g but of a diameter a little to big for most running apparel or jersey pockets.
So with suitably low release honey on offer, decent amounts of vitamins and minerals and broad organic creds TriGear would certainly encourage you to look beyond the packaging and give what lies beneath a try.
Honey Stinger Energy Bars retail at £27.75 for 15 and Honey Stinger Waffles are yours for £22.40 for 16. Further details and online purchase at honeystingeruk.co.uk
