Robie Robes were the brainchild of Martyn and Tamsin Tarplee who both grew up on the beaches of West Cornwall, enjoying a range of water sports regardless of season. In the autumn of 2007, they designed a robe that they believed would ‘take the hassle out of changing whilst keeping them warm, dry and covered.’ TriGear took to some late-season open water to put Robie Robes to the test…
There are three options available from Robie Robes – the Robie Original, Robie Pro and Robie Pro Max with TriGear looking at both the Original and Pro Max. Taking each in turn:
The Robie Robes Original is made from soft, 100% cotton velour on the outside with a really cosy towelling inner. Unlike some makes of change robes, dryrobe for example, Robie Robes are completely sleeveless; whilst there are pros and cons of this, in our opinion what little extra coverage a short sleeve may afford there is more advantage in terms of manoeuvrability with a sleeveless design. The cut is loose and generous for easy changing (and so that you don’t feel cocooned by the experience) and the large hood helps in both quickly regaining body heat and, obviously, for getting hair dry.
The Robie Robes Original is available in XS for teens (or smaller adults), Medium and XS for ‘6′fters’ and in a range of colours: black, grey, green and ‘grape’ (light purple.)
The Robie Robes Pro Max is where things get really serious and will appeal to those who are truly fearless when it comes to training in all weathers. Featuring the same generous cut and sleeveless design the Pro Max is lightweight (850g), fully breathable but water- and wind-proof. The storm hood is toggled for an optionally tight fit against howling winds and the whole robe can be furled away into it for transporting and storage. Despite the impressive weather-proofed exterior the Pro Max is just as comfy (and absorbent) on the inside with its polyester microfiber lining. Add to this two pretty generous, zipped, side pockets and you have a truly impressive all-year tri training tool at your disposal.
Available in the same sizing as the Robie Robes Original, the Pro Max comes only in black – it is, after all, a serious bit of kit.
The Robies Robes Pro – sitting mid-range – is something of a slightly stripped back version of the Pro Max; again available only in black and at a lighter, marginally less all-weather, 650g. A good option for early and late season training swims.
The Original retails at an exceptionally reasonable £36.98 (great general beach-wear for kids too), the Pro is £49.99 and the Pro Max a heftier, but not unreasonable, £79.99.
