The Speedo Biofuse Fin, part of the wider Biofuse range that also includes paddles, is designed for both training and fitness. Speedo note that: ‘The human body combines the structural strength of the skeleton and the flexibility of muscles. The result is performance greater that its individual parts,’ and that the Biofuse products are intended to mimic that harmony whilst providing exceptional fit and comfort.
Surprisingly heavy at nearly 1kg a pair, this weight of course noticeably drops once in the pool and is a necessary part to both the aerobic and conditioning benefits that using fins provides. Available in five sizes – XS-XL – which broadly covers a UK size 2-12 – it’s vital to pick a pair that offer the best fit; too snug and you’ll really feel the squeeze and pull, too big and the biomechanical advantage will be lost (as, most likely will be your fins.)
Once in place the 100% silicon fins are remarkable comfortable and if you have never trained with fins before you will immediately start to feel the benefit – expect some post-training aches in the days following your first sessions as the extra resistance gets to work on the muscles.
Besides helping to build strength, including through the lower core, the Biofuse Fin is a training aid that can ultimately improve speed and improve overall technique. It takes time and practise (as does triathlon in general) but persevering with training fins can ultimately pay dividends.
