USN – that’s Ultimate Sports Nutrition – sits more towards the ‘sciencey’ end of the sports nutrition spectrum. But, once out of the wrapper, the USN Energy Bar actually has a decidedly homemade quality to it with good-sized pieces of the main ingredients – pumpkin and sunflower seeds, almonds and raisins – clearly visible.
There’s nothing sciencey about the taste of the USN bar either, a slightly sweet hit of honey of course but that gives way to the seeds and the juiciness of the fruit. Texture – so often neglected in sports nutrition – it good too, there’s really something to get the teeth into on the run or ride, but it’s not over-sticky and just a slight slug of water helps get things down.
Fully loaded with healthy ingredients and containing no artificial colours or preservatives, the 50g USN Honey, Seed & Nuts Energy Bar delivers a spot-on 258kcal, with 20g of carbs, 12.6g of which are sugars derived predominantly from the raisins, slow-release honey (which makes up just over 21% of the bar by weight) and the addition of maltodextrin. A reasonably substantial 3.6g of fibre and 7.6g protein makes these a reasonable option for post exercise recovery too.
By way of comparison, and as the name suggests, the Protein, Seeds and Nuts option ups the protein to 14.1g and adds glucose syrup, peanuts, hazelnuts, soya crisps and fructose-glucose syrup to the mix.
USN have pulled off quite a trick here – branded to appeal to the science-minded triathlete but delivering a taste and texture likely to appeal to those who look for a more ‘natural’, homemade product.
The USN Honey, Seeds & Nuts Energy Bars retails at £41.22 for 18 x 50g, the 65g Protein, Seed & Nuts bars retail at £29.88 for 12. Further details and online purchase at usn.co.uk
